Experts Discuss Preventing Thyroid Disorders and Cancer In Case Of Nuclear Incident From the American Thyroid Association

The American Thyroid Association has posted a public health statement to its web site about patients' risk of setting off antiterrorist radiation detectors after being tested or treated with radioactive materials. In a December 4 letter in JAMA, Drs. Christoph Buettner and Martin Surks wrote that after they treated a Graves' disease patient with radioactive iodine, he was twice detained by authorities in the Manhattan subways. Other detections and detentions have been reported around the country. Drs. Buettner and Surks recommend that treating physicians give patients a letter documenting their test or treatment, in case they are stopped by authorities. The American Thyroid Association statement includes a model form that physicians can fill out for their patients.
